Devkah pulled the trigger halfway in. The power bar had a full bright green strip. He held the ten-inch long weapon steady up at eye level and aimed at the first enemy that came in sight. They were going to pay for hurting her!

He squeezed the trigger and a burst of orange light flashed in the direction of the Feeju guard. The guard had barely raised his clunky gun when he flew back against the wall and crashed down on the ground.

The flesh of his shoulder was suddenly pierced through and seared with pain. The bastards got in a lucky shot. His arms jolted up and broke his aim for a second. Kelly rocked herself over and crashed her chair to the ground. Good girl, he thought.

He ducked as an orange flash flew over him into a guard coming in the doors behind them. One of his females kicked backwards and connected the Feeju running at her in the stomach, before her boot connected his face and guided him to the ground quickly. He ran over to Kelly and pulled her upright.

“Are you okay?” he asked, untying her hands. Her wrists were red and bleeding in places.

He saw the wound on her leg and flinched.

“Devkah!” she said. “How did you know I was here?”

She pulled her arms free and touched the perimeter of her seeping wound.

He knelt in front of her. “The situation reeked of Feeju!” he said.

She laughed. “Reeked being the optimum word!”

He put his arm under hers and helped her off the chair.

“Can you move?” he asked. “We need to get you out of here.”

She stood up slowly and fell against him. He put his hands on her shoulders and steadied her.

She sniffed and said: “I’m okay. I’m okay.”

He saw her wipe tears off her cheek.

“We’re going to get you out of here. I’ll protect you, Kelly.”

She rested her head in the centre of his chest for a second, looked up at him and smiled. Then she moved away from him and looked at the others.

“We’ve got to go, Commander,” one of the females said, heading back towards the double doors.

He was expecting more of a fight getting out again.

“Yes, take Kelly back to the ship, Valrin,” he ordered. “We’ve got to finish our business here first.”

Kelly looked up at him.

“You’ll be safe,” he said. “We’ll join you as soon as we’re done.”

She looked back at him as she was led away quickly. Devkah smiled at her and followed the rest of the Xelo squad as they headed in the opposite direction. He hated having to leave her again, but they had a vital task to complete. He glanced back at her one more time. She was keeping most of her weight on her stronger leg. He wished he could pick her up and carry her back to the vessel. But he wasn’t just doing this for her. It would save her whole planet from enslavement and planets like theirs.

The charging strip was fully green. He kept his finger on the trigger.
